Georg Friedrich Schmidt
Born January 24, 1712
in Schönerlinde near Berlin
Died January 25, 1775
in Berlin

Prussian engraver and painter who studied ca. 1736 in Paris under the French master Larmessin. Royal engraver in Berlin 1744-1757 and in Skt. Petersburg from 1757. He returned to work in Berlin in 1762 and stayed there until his death in 1775.

Boswell went, with C. F. Hübner, to see a selection of Schmidt's prints on August 27, 1764. It is unclear if Schmidt himself was present.

Unless otherwise noted, the source for a dated quotation of Boswell's is generally the corresponding volume of the Yale Trade Editions of Boswell's journals.
