Brother of Isabella Schaw. Probably a student of Theology in Oxford in 1763.

A Samuel Wells Thomson was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS) on November 8, 1770. According to Gentleman's Magazine for September 1778 Rev. Samuel Wells Thomson, LL.D and FRS died in Gratz, Germany in September 1778.

Boswell had tea with Mr. Thomson in Oxford on April 25, 1763. Boswell probably knew him through his sister Isabella.
