Robert Darcy - 4th Earl of Holdernesse
British diplomat and politician. British ambassador at Venice (1744-1746), ambassador at The Hague (1749-1751), Secretary of State (1751-1761), Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports (1765-1778). All of his titles became extinct upon his death, except for the Barony of Conyers which was inherited by his daughter Amelia.
Boswell possibly met Lord Holdernesse at The Hague around June 5, 1764, when he mentioned a number of the Englishmen present in the town at the time.
Unless otherwise noted, the source for a dated quotation of Boswell's is generally the corresponding volume of the Yale Trade Editions of Boswell's journals.
