Mary Carter
Born 1730
in Deal, Kent
Died 1790

Daughter of Rev. Nicolas Carter (1687-1774). Married (ca. 1752) to Andrew Douglas, with whom she had a son, George.

Mary was a half-sister of the author and translator Elizabeth Carter (1717-1806), with whom she seem to have shared a close relationship, judging by the number of references to Mary in the correspondence between Lady Elizabeth Montagu and Elizabeth Carter.

Mary was the wife of Boswell's friend Doctor Andrew Douglas, and he stayed with the for the first few weeks of his stay in London in 1762. Boswell described her as "a good humoured woman, [...] very lively without much wit."1

Unless otherwise noted, the source for a dated quotation of Boswell's is generally the corresponding volume of the Yale Trade Editions of Boswell's journals.
