Margaret Craufurd
Lady Dumfries

Daughter of Ronald Craufurd of Restalrig (d. 1762). Married (1771) Patrick McDouall-Crichton, 6th Earl of Dumfries, with whom she had one daughter, Elizabeth Penelope (1772-1797). 

Margaret was a distant cousin of James Boswell's, his ancestor and namesake James Boswell, 4th of Auchinleck, having married Marion Craufurd of Kerse ca. 1600. 

Following her marriage to the 6th Earl of Dumfries in 1771, she lived at Dumfries House directly adjacent to the lands of Auchinleck House. For more about the relationship between the Boswells of Auchinleck and the Earl and Lady of Dumfries, see the article on the 6th Earl.
