Son of John Mitchelson and Janet Hay. Married (1738) to Margaret Brisbane. They had at least three daughters, Isabella, Margaret and Harriet.

Boswell went, with John Webster, to visit Mr. Mitchelson and his daughter, Isabella, and new son-in-law, on October 28, 1762.
