Personal data
John Craufurd

Son of Patrick Craufurd of Drumsoy (d. 1733) and Jane Craufurd, 2nd daughter of Archibald Craufurd, 15th of Auchenames. Brother of Patrick Craufurd. He achieved the rank of Lieut-General in the army and became Governor of the Island of Minorca, on which he died. He was probably the John Craufurd who was in 1761 MP for Berwickshire.

On January 10, 1763, then on a visit to Lady Northumberland, Boswell mentions having visited Patrick Craufurd on the preceding day, referring to Patrick as a brother of General Craufurd's.

Unless otherwise noted, the source for a dated quotation of Boswell's is generally the corresponding volume of the Yale Trade Editions of Boswell's journals.
