James Boswell's uncle John was a member of a sect known as the Glasites.

Boswell met him several times in the spring and summer of 1763, and took a liking to Crookshanks, whom he described as "a spirited fellow [who] has read a good deal, and is much of a gentleman"1 and "a fine, lively, extravagant fellow"2. Crookshanks sometimes visited Boswell in Downing Street, and they breakfasted together on at least one occasion, on June 10, 1763.
