James Boswell died in 1795 believing he had touched and kissed a cache of Shakespeare's original letters and papers discovered by a Mr. Ireland. His friend, Edmond Malone, publicly exposed the lot as a forgery just a year later.

A Samuel Wells Thomson was elected a fellow of the Royal Society on November 8, 1770. According to Gentleman's Magazine for September 1778 Rev. Samuel Wells Thomson, LL.D and FRS died in Gratz, Germany in September 1778.

Boswell had tea with Mr. Thomson in Oxford on April 25, 1763. Boswell probably knew him through his sister Isabella.
