Advocate. Son of John Mackenzie and Rebecca Mackenzie. Married (1763 or 1769) to Maria Lancaster, dau of John Lancaster of Cambridge. They had 6 children. Sometime Commisary of Edinburgh.

Boswell met him at Kames on October 24, 1762, describing him as "a young gentleman of Inverness-shire, very genteel and well-bred and obliging".

James Boswell died in 1795 believing he had touched and kissed a cache of Shakespeare's original letters and papers discovered by a Mr. Ireland. His friend, Edmond Malone, publicly exposed the lot as a forgery just a year later.
