John Stewart - Castle Stewart

John Stewart

Sometime MP and clerk of the Pipe in the Court of Exchequer in Scotland.1

Son of William Stewart and Isabel Maxwell. Married (ca. 1735) to Jean Craik. He had at least two sons, Alexander (c. 1739-1794) and William (1737-1797), both of whom became elected for parliament.2

Life with Boswell:

Stewart visited Patrick Heron's Kirroughtrie during Boswell's stay at the place on October 1, 1762. Boswell described Stewart as "a man of sense and business". Stewart seems to have been a relation of Heron's, his father's second wife being a Heron herself.
