On his Grand Tour of Europe in 1764-1765, Boswell visited and befriended the famous philosophers Jean-Jacques Rosseau and François-Marie Arouet (Voltaire), and back in Edinburgh he was a personal friend of David Hume.

According to Boswell "A gentleman born at Maybole in Ayrshire, but who has been nineteen years at Oxford and gives lectures on anatomy, and is also well employed as a physician." (LJ230463) Dr. John Smith, M.D. of St. Mary Hall, Oxford.
Life with Boswell:
Boswell met Dr. Smith on April 23 and 24, 1763 when he visited James Macdonald at Oxford. Boswell found him "learned, clever [and] agreeable". (LJ240463)
