Georg Friedrich Schmidt - Engraver and Printer

Biography


Birth: Jan 24, 1712 in Schönerlinde near Berlin
Death: Jan 25, 1775 in Berlin

Prussian engraver and painter who studied ca. 1736 in Paris under the French master Larmessin. Royal engraver in Berlin 1744-1757 and in Skt. Petersburg from 1757. He returned to work in Berlin in 1762, and stayed there until his death in 1775.

Life with James Boswell

Boswell went, with C. F. Hübner, to see a selection of Schmidt's prints on August 27, 1764. It is unclear if Schmidt himself was present.
