Boswell's "Life of Johnson": An Edition of the Original Manuscript: Volume 2 - 1766-1776
1999

The second of four volumes in the Yale Research Edition's transcription of Boswell's working manuscript of the Life of Johnson, covering the decade from 1766 to March 1776.

Following the genetic transcription method established by Marshall Waingrow in Volume 1, this volume allows readers to trace how Boswell converted his raw journal entries, letters, and loose notes into the narrative of the Life. It covers Samuel Johnson's friendship with Henry and Hester Thrale, meetings of The Club, and Boswell's regular spring visits to London in 1768, 1769, 1772, 1773, 1775, and early 1776, showing the revisions and excisions made by Boswell and Edmond Malone prior to publication.

Edited by Bruce Redford with Elizabeth Goldring, Volume 2 of the Manuscript Edition was published in 1999 by Edinburgh University Press and Yale University Press.
