- 1There seems to be some confusion as to when the two related clubs were founded. According to some sources, The Poker Club predated the Select Society. Other sources claim that the Poker Club was formed in 1762 “to stir up the question of a Scotch militia denied Scotland after the '45 rising” (Ross, Ian. (1995). The Life of Adam Smith. p. 141, 346) whereas the Select Society was founded in 1754 (with Adam Smith as co-founder, according to the same source p. 141). Most members of the Poker Club were also members of the Select Society, although the Club was much smaller. The confusion may stem from Chambers' 1856 Biographical Dictionary of Eminent Scotsmen, which stated that the Poker Club had for its object harmless conviviality and was succeeded, in the year 1756, by the "Select Society,". Alexander Carlyle, in his autobiography, explicitly states, that the club was founded at the beginning of 1762 and continued to meet for about twenty years, which seems to clinch it.
