Abbé Joseph Victor
Rumoured to be the illegitimate son of King Victor Amadeus II (1666-1732) of Sardinia, little is known about Victor except that he acted as a supervisor for the education of some of the princes of the electorate of Saxony in the 1750s and early 1760s, including Franz Xavier and Frederick Augustus I.
According to The Journal of His German and Swiss Travels, 1764 Victor "was accused of extra-marital relations and fathering a child out of wedlock, and would be relieved of his duties by Prince Xavier three weeks after JB's visit [to Dresden]." (p. 161)
Boswell was presented to the Court of Saxony on October 12, 1764 and there saw Abbé Victor whom he described as "a very pretty man".
Unless otherwise noted, the source for a dated quotation of Boswell's is generally the corresponding volume of the Yale Trade Editions of Boswell's journals.
