On his Grand Tour of Europe in 1764-1765, Boswell visited and befriended the famous philosophers Jean-Jacques Rosseau and François-Marie Arouet (Voltaire), and back in Edinburgh he was a personal friend of David Hume.

Biography:
Son of Joseph Hume of Ninewells (1680-1713) and Catherine Falconer (b. 1683). Brother of David Hume. Married (1751) to Agnes Carre, which whom he had at least two children, David Hume (1757-1838), and Katharine Hume.
Life with Boswell:
Boswell met Hume at Kames on October 20, 1762, describing him as "a sensible good man, who reads more than usual. He has an anxiety of temper which hurts him. Very different from his brother."
