Married to Ann Bragg (d. 1781). Formerly a merchant in Rotterdam, in 1754 he became British Consul at Leghorn (Livorno). He held that position until 1776, when he moved back to England and settled in the mansion Mount Clare in Roehampton, Surrey. For his services at Leghorn we was appointed Knight of the Order of St. Anna by the Russian Empress Catherine II.1
