On his Grand Tour of Europe in 1764-1765, Boswell visited and befriended the famous philosophers Jean-Jacques Rosseau and François-Marie Arouet (Voltaire), and back in Edinburgh he was a personal friend of David Hume.

Biography:
Son of Alexander Erskine (d. 1756), 5th Earl of Kellie, and Janet Pitcairn (d. 1775). Brother of Elizabeth, Anne, Andrew and Thomas Alexander Erskine. He inherited the Earldom of Kellie following the death of his brother Thomas Alexander in 1781, thus becoming the 7th Earl of Kellie. Nicknamed The Owl by Boswell and Andrew Erskine, he was an army captain in 1763.
