Biography

Eckhard August von Stammer. (1705-1774)

Lord of Ballenstedt and Asmusstedt, and Chief Master of Horse at the the court of Brunswick in the 1760s. 1

Life with James Boswell:

Boswell met a Monsieur de Stammer, a Knight of the Teutonic Order on June 27, 1764, for whom he had a letter from Count Bentinck. Boswell met him a few more times during the following months. On August 18, Boswell waited on him in Brunswick, writing in his journal that the knight had fallen from his horse and broken an arm.

The identification of Eckhard von Stammer in GT1 and JGST is probably correct. However, one Eckhard Heinrich von Stammer (1721-1777) had been in the service of the Dukes of Brunswick since 1738, and died with the rank of general in 1777. In 1762 he was a Major General. I'm guessing there is a family relation between the two. (According to Doblin & Lynn. (1993).
