James Boswell died in 1795 believing he had touched and kissed a cache of Shakespeare's original letters and papers discovered by a Mr. Ireland. His friend, Edmond Malone, publicly exposed the lot as a forgery just a year later.
Friedrich Wilhelm von WylichBorn 1716
Major General in 1763. Son of Johann Christoph von Wylich (1681-1727), and Hermine Alexandrine von Wittenhorst (1685-1745). Married (1763) to Anna Dorothea Scherff.
Boswell informs us, that he is a cousin to Baron von Spaen. The only family relation I have been able to find between the Spaens and the Wylichs is the marriage in 1681 between Dietrich von Wylich (1649-1709) and Florentina Anna von Spaen (b. ca. 1660).
Life with Boswell:
Boswell was recommended to General Wylich, presumably by Baron von Spaen, and, on July 22, 1764, talked to him in the royal garden in Berlin.
