Sometime vintner and owner of The Star and Garter in Writer's Court, Edinburgh, which was apparently "a favourite resort of the magistrates and town councillors"1 and of the lawyers as well.2. The pub was even mentioned in Sir Walter Scott's Guy Mannering.

In his journal for February 5, 1767 Boswell reported going to Clerihue's (i.e. The Star and Garter) to meet with William Wilson and "Bryce, a client".
