James Boswell died in 1795 believing he had touched and kissed a cache of Shakespeare's original letters and papers discovered by a Mr. Ireland. His friend, Edmond Malone, publicly exposed the lot as a forgery just a year later.

Boswell secured from Rivarola several letters of recommendation for use on his Corsican expedition, on which he embarked from Leghorn on October 11, 1765.
In his Account of Corsica Boswell referred to Rivarola as "my very good friend".
