On his Grand Tour of Europe in 1764-1765, Boswell visited and befriended the famous philosophers Jean-Jacques Rosseau and François-Marie Arouet (Voltaire), and back in Edinburgh he was a personal friend of David Hume.

Biography:
Son of Patrick Craufurd of Drumsoy (d. 1733) and Jane Craufurd, 2nd daughter of Archibald Craufurd, 15th of Auchenames. Brother of Patrick Craufurd. He achieved the rank of Lieut-General in the army and became Governor of the Island of Minorca, on which he died. He was probably the John Craufurd who was in 1761 MP for Berwickshire.
Life with Boswell:
On January 10, 1763, then on a visit to Lady Northumberland, Boswell mentions having visited Patrick Craufurd on the preceeding day, referring to P.C. as "a brother of General Craufurd's".
