James Boswell died in 1795 believing he had touched and kissed a cache of Shakespeare's original letters and papers discovered by a Mr. Ireland. His friend, Edmond Malone, publicly exposed the lot as a forgery just a year later.
A servant of Patrick Heron's.
Life with Boswell:
Boswell mentions Cowie in his journal of September 22, 1762. On a hunt, Cowie helped pulling Boswell's horse free from a ditch of thick mud, and Boswell wrote "by the seasonable aid of one of Heron's servants, John Cowie, a judicious active fellow, we had her fairly relieved without her sustaining any damage."
