One of Boswells 8xGreat-Grandfathers was King Christian I of Denmark. Another of his 8xGreat-Grandfathers was King James II Stewart of Scotland. King James II of Scotland was the paternal AND maternal Great-great-great-grandfather of Boswell's great-grandfather James Boswell. In 1989 a play called Boswell for the Defence was performed at The Playhouse in London. Leo McKern (TV's Rumpole of the Bailey) starred as James Boswell. You can read the script here (PDF) and a review here. It isn't based on the journal entries from 1769-1774 (the Yale ed. for those years is titled Boswell for the Defence), but takes place in London in 1793. Michael Caine was scheduled to appear as James Boswell in a 2001 movie called Boswell for the Defence, based on the script of the play of the same name, but the movie was cancelled before filming even began. (Link) In 1993 a television movie was made called Boswell & Johnson's Tour of the Western Islands (Link). John Sessions performed the role of Boswell, while Robbie Coltrane played the role of Dr. Johnson (as he had previously done in an episode of Blackadder III) A few years ago Auchinleck House was purchased by The Landmark Trust who has since then restored it, and is now renting it out to people who would like to try life as a Scottish laird. The Observer reviewed that particular experience in December 2004 (Link). Boswell was a freemason and reached the rank of Depute Grand Master for Scotland (1776-1778). He declined to be nominated for Grand Master. Other family members were masons too. (Link)
