Biography

John Irwin. (1728-1788) (aka. Colonel Irwin)

Commander-in-Chief in Ireland (1775-1782). Close friend of Lord George Germain, sometime American Secretary. A Colonel in 1762. Sometime head of the 57th Regiment (Link(1) and Link(2)) . Member of Parliament (1762-1783)

Life with James Boswell:

Boswell met a Colonel Irwin at the Sheridan's on 31/12-62. Pottle (in LJ) gives his first name as John. I am pretty sure this is the Colonel Irwin referred to. Described by Boswell as "a genteel, well-bred, pretty man."
