Biography

Mr. Hayward. (-)

Innkeeper at The Black Lion, Water Lane, Fleet Street in London, where Boswell slept on the night of 19/11-62. Also the place where he first slept with Louisa Lewis on the night of 12/01-63.

The will of a John Hayward, Innholder of Water Lane was probated on February 17, 1764 - this is almost certainly the Mr. Hayward referred to by Boswell.1 The will was not necessarily probated immediately after his death, but we can establish that Hayward most probably died at some time between January 13, 1763 and February 17, 1764.

Notes:

Note 1: A digital copy of the will itself is available from Documents Online.
