Catharina Johanna Mossel (1741-1795)

Biography

Catharina Johanna Mossel. (1741-1795) (aka. Madame d'Amerongen)

Born in the Dutch East Indies, daughter of Jacob Mossel and Adriana Appels. Married (1765) to Gerard Maximiliaan Taets van Amerongen (1727-1788).1

Life with James Boswell:

Madame Geelvinck probably introduced Boswell and Madame Amerongen to each other on February 7, 1764.

Notes:

Note 1: Boswell quotes Madame Geelvinck as referring to a Madame d'Amerongen, sister to Monsieur Mossel, who wished to make his acquaintance (BiH, p. 139). Most sources give their year of marriage as 1765, but this was possibly some sort of civil marriage - they may have had some sort of common law or other marriage before this. Thus, the identification of Madame Amerongen with Chatharina Johanna Mossel is almost certain
