Biography

James Dodsley. (1724-1797)

A London publisher and bookseller (Until 1759 with his brother Robert Dodsley). Shop at Tully's Head in Pall Mall. Published works by Frances Sheridan, Oliver Goldsmith, Samuel Johnson and by Boswell himself. Also publishers of Laurence Sterne's The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman (1759). A memorial tablet for James Dodsley in St. James's Church, Westminister describes him as upright and liberal in all his dealings, a friend to the afflicted in general, and to the poor of this parish in particular. Life with James Boswell:

James Dodsley had published Boswell's The Cub at Newmarket in 1762, and on November 24, 1762 Boswell went to Dodsley to collect the profit of 13 shillings.
