BiographyJohn Cameron. (1732-1762) (aka. Cameron of Lochiel) 20th Chief of Clan Cameron. 7th of Lochiel. Son of Donald Cameron of Lochiel (d. 1748) and Anne Campbell. He was brought up in France, due to his family's history of Jacobite sympathies. He unsuccessfully attempted to have the estates of Lochiel restored to the family. Life with James Boswell:
Boswell probably knew him well, but as he died in 1762, the only reference to him in the journals is on November 11, 1762, when Boswell writes that "Poor Mr. Cameron of Lochiel, a genteel, pretty, worthy young man, was just dead, which affected me much, and made me join reflection with my mirth".
Note on John Cameron's parents: Donald Cameron (1695-1748) was the son of John Cameron (d. 1748), and fought, with the young pretender, at Culloden in 1745 where he was wounded. He was known as The Gentle Lochiel. John's mother, Anne Campbell, was the daughter of James Campbell, 5th Bt. of Auchinbreck, and Janet Macleod.
