"A gentleman born at Maybole in Ayrshire, but who has been nineteen years at Oxford and gives lectures on anatomy, and is also well employed as a physician." (LJ230463) Dr. John Smith, M.D. of St. Mary Hall, Oxford.

Life with James Boswell:

Boswell met Dr. Smith on April 23 and 24, 1763 when he visited James Macdonald at Oxford. Boswell found him "learned, clever [and] agreeable". (LJ240463)
